Farmers had heaved a sigh of relief with rainfall recently started after a gap of more than one month in erstwhile Warangal district. But with heavy rains lashing the region for the past few days, they are now worried that their crops may get damaged.

Farmers have cultivated cotton, chilli, paddy, corn and other crops over 17.74 lakh acres in the united Warangal district during this Kharif season.

Nomula Naresh, a farmer and resident of Khanpur mandal in Warangal district, has four-and-a-half acres of land on outskirts of Ashwininagar village. He cultivated cotton in two acres and corn over rest of the area. He is a worried man following heavy rains for past few days. His corn crop has got totally damaged.

Naresh says he had taken a loan of 1.5 lakh for cultivating corn. But with the crop destroyed, he is hoping the state government will bail him out with compensation.

Agricultural scientist G. Usha Rani said mild rainfall is useful for farmers who cultivate cotton, chilli, paddy and corn crops. But heavy rainfall is not suitable for any crop. Further, once rains stop, they will have to take remedial measures to check pests and insects from attacking the crops.

However, if rains continue for some more days, all the hard work done by farmers will go waste, Usha Rani pointed out.
