Crop losses due to the drought is pegged at around ₹46,000 crore. The Karnataka government has sought ₹7,142.64 crore in drought relief from the Centre under National Disaster Response Fund norms.
Nearly 90% of talukas in Karnataka are now affected by drought after the state government added 40 more to the list, taking the total number of drought-affected talukas to 217 out of 240.
The government has estimated crop losses at around ₹46,000 crore and has sought ₹7,142.64 crore in drought relief from the Centre under National Disaster Response Fund norms. It had earlier sought ₹3,705.30 crore in assistance.
"If farmers suffer, everything comes to a standstill. Therefore, the central government should come to the aid of the state's farmers," Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had said.
A Central Inter-Ministerial team began a three-day assessment of drought-affected areas on October 3 and is expected to complete its inspection by October 6. The team will assess the ground situation and collect data from state officials before submitting its report to the Centre.
