The yield of samba and thaladi crops in the Cauvery delta districts has come down by 50% due to extreme drought, PM president and Rajya Sabha member Anbumani Ramadoss said, urging state govt to provide a compensation of 40,000 per acre to the farmers who had suffered huge losses.

In a statement on Friday, Anbumani said crops raised on rhore than two lakh acres in the delta districts withered away due to lack of water and the yield of the crops raised in more than 1.5 lakh acres came down by half.

He pointed out that generally the yield used to be usually above 2,700kg of paddy per acre in Cauvery delta districts and the yield last year was between 2,400kg and 2,500kg per acre. But in this year, the yield in the delta districts was between 1,200kg and 1,500kg. It proves that the paddy yield has fallen by at least 40% or 50%.

Anbumani said it is the state's responsibility to save the farmers from the debt burden. The govt's compensation of 5,400 per acre of crop is insufficient.
