Summer heat and unseasonal rains have affected the production of tomatoes and other vegetables in Tamil Nadu. This has led to an alarming rise in the prices of staple veggies in the state. On Monday, tomato prices touched Rs 100 per kg-mark in retail markets and the price of beans hit an all-time high of Rs 120 per kg. Also, ginger was sold at Rs 200 per kg at the Koyambedu market.

The unseasonal rains have badly impacted vegetable farming in the state. Tomato, beans, ginger, green chili, okra and leafy vegetable crops were largely damaged in the rains. As a result, the arrival of vegetables has reduced significantly in local markets across the state.

Traders at Koyambedu Wholesale Vegetables Market in Chennai said the arrival of tomatoes to local markets dropped by 70 per cent, which resulted in a price rise.

Recently, there has been a clear shortage of tomatoes in India, causing significant strain on consumers' wallets. Retail prices of tomatoes have skyrocketed to Rs 80-120 per kilogram, while wholesale prices have surged to 65-70 per kilogram. This surge in prices can be related to a combination of factors, including high temperatures, low production, and delayed rainfall across various parts of the country.
