Italy - The bad weather has affected vegetable yields

This is truly a bad year for Emilia-Romagna: first there was the drought, then the frost followed by the excessive rain and hail and, finally, the flood. "The bad weather that hit the heart of our region as far as the Riviera Romagnola caused serious damage to the agricultural sector," reads a Sipo note.

"Yields per hectare are much below the norm, so profits for producers are reduced. For example, celery struggles to reach 500 grams per plant when it would normally reach 1 kg-1.2 kg. Productions that managed to survive are now at risk of asphyxia and might suffer quality problems due to the abundance of water."

"In extreme cases, entire Sipo crops were destroyed, just like in some companies with areas dedicated to aromatic herbs. Last winter's drought with temperatures above average followed by the incessant rain caused a disaster in the land where Sipo plans its seasonal crops."

"Due to these terrible events, the availability of products is below the demand of potential clients who have not signed procurement plans. The flood hit Romagna hard but, as in the past, we are all focused on restarting our activities again soon."
