Jamaica - Banana Board collaborates with CIRAD to address TR4 disease and test resistant varieties

In Jamaica, the Banana Board has embarked on a crucial partnership with France's Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) to mitigate the threats posed by the Tropical Race 4 (TR4) disease. This collaboration aims to introduce and evaluate banana varieties resilient to the devastating disease, with JP Farms and the Bodles Research Station playing key roles in the testing phase. TR4, a soil-borne fungus, has wreaked havoc on banana crops globally, prompting urgent action within the Jamaican agricultural sector.

The initiative involves a meticulous process of selecting and cultivating banana plantlets resistant to TR4. These plantlets, sourced from CIRAD's extensive collection, undergo rigorous screening at JP Farms before being transferred to Bodles for further evaluation under local conditions. The goal is to identify varieties that not only withstand TR4 but also meet market demands and adapt well to Jamaica's agricultural environment.

This collaborative effort underscores the importance of international cooperation in combating agricultural challenges. By leveraging CIRAD's expertise and resources, Jamaica aims to safeguard its banana industry from the looming threat of TR4, ensuring the sustainability and prosperity of this vital sector.
