Japan - Extreme summer heat impacts fruit and veg production

17.11.2023 503 views

Japan is grappling with the repercussions of this summer's extreme heat and insufficient rainfall, which have adversely impacted crop growth, including fruits and vegetables. The unfavorable conditions have led to decreased shipments and significant price hikes.

In Aomori Prefecture, known for its Tsugaru apples, the agriculture ministry reports that 10% of the harvest couldn't be shipped due to issues like skin and internal discoloration. This represents a notable setback for apple production in the region.

Other crops, such as tomatoes, daikon, and Chinese cabbages, have also experienced a decline in shipments, contributing to the observed surge in prices. The combination of reduced yields and increased demand is putting pressure on the availability and affordability of these essential food items.
