Storm Daniel reached Libya at the beginning of the week, killing more than 6,000 people and leaving tens of thousands missing. The worst-hit city is Derna, where the storm has caused dam failures. The city is located in the Al Jabal Al Akhdar, one of the country's main agricultural regions.

Idriss Al Mahdy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Libyan Agriculture and Environment Organization, told FreshPlaza: "We have lost contact with our branch in Derna and we are still in the dark regarding the extent of the crop damage."

The affected region is one of the few green areas in Libya's desertic landscape. Al Mahdy says: "Al Jabal Al Akhdar is one of Libya's richest regions in terms of fauna and biodiversity. The region is home to important agricultural production, including vegetables and fruit trees."

"The impact of the floods is seemingly significant, as vast areas have been washed out. But it's still too early to assess the damage. The immediate urgency is to direct humanitarian efforts to the region," concludes Al Mahdy.
