Mexico - Mango producers in Veracruz lost 50-70% of the harvest to a cold front

The wind gusts of more than 70 km/h caused by Cold Front #52 at the end of April toppled a considerable part of the Manila mango production, scheduled for 2023, in the municipalities of Actopan and Puente Nacional, stated Guillermo Palmeros Marin, the president of Veracruz's Mango Producers State Council.

“We lost nearly 50 to 70% of what we already had produced in the two municipalities where the technology to combat the fruit fly was applied the most to have a good outlet of fruit,” stated Palmeros Marin.

Producers requested support from the Secretariat of Agricultural, Rural, and Fisheries Development (Sedarpa), and the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) to face the millionaire losses they have. They also requested support from the technical secretary of the Mango Product System of La Antigua District.

Veracruz has about 12,000 hectares of mango planted mainly in the municipalities of Actopan and Puente Nacional. Its fruit is sold to merchants in Puebla, Mexico, Villa Hermosa, and Mérida. 135 hectares in Actopan are grown following specific phytosanitary measures so they can be exported to the United States and Japan.
