According to the specialists from the Federation of Agricultural Producers of Moldova FARM, Moldovan vegetable growers suffer losses due to the prolonged April rainfall. Some onion crops could not be effectively protected from weeds, so the fields will be cultivated with discs and reseeded. Apparently, cases of losses of the future onion harvest are not yet widespread, but they still cause concern.

Earlier, EastFruit reported, citing managers of enterprises importing inputs for agricultural production, that Moldovan farmers purchased about 30% more onion seeds than last year. According to expert estimates, no more than 2 00-2 500 ha were planted with onions in the country in 2022.

EastFruit analysts note that vegetable farmers only in some areas in the south of neighboring Ukraine managed to sow onions for the 2023 harvest. Taking into account this, as well as the ongoing battles and the announced counter-offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, it can be assumed that there will not be a lot of local onions in several regions of Ukraine. Therefore, it is possible that Moldova will actively supply onions to the Ukrainian market this year, too, as in 2022.

According to the Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova, it exported 8 000 tonnes of onions to Ukraine in 2022.
