Lagayan farmer Roberto Layao is thankful for the crop insurance money he received from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC).
“Dakkel nga gundaway daytoy nga paggatang metlang ti bugaso ken dagidiay usaren pagpa-tractor daytoy masakbay nga panagtalon,” he shared.
Layao is among the 2,150 farmers and fisherfolk in Abra who received indemnity checks worth over P14 million from the PCIC during a payout held from April 28 to 30, 2026. He received a check worth almost P15,000.
Provincial Extension Office Supervisor for Ilocos Sur and Abra Mercury Pascua said that the indemnity checks are given to farmers and fisherfolk who insured their crops or livestock with the PCIC last year or earlier this 2026.
“Agdepende dagidiay maawat da kadagiti area da, degree of damage, cost of production at the time of loss, and stage of crop at the time of loss. Haan agpaparis ti maala da,” she said.
Pascua also urged farmers and fisherfolk to get their crops, livestock, and equipment insured.
She shared that the PCIC also offers life insurance plans to protect beneficiaries from accidents, deaths, and disability.
“Haan tayo met ammo nu ania ti mapasamak wenno dumteng so at least naka-insure tayo kasla pammatalged. Daytoy ket awan met iti bayadan da nga premium na ta daytoy gamin ket sinubsidize ni government,” Pascua said.
She informed the farmers and fisherfolk that they can coordinate with their Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) for the crop insurance form and other requirements.
Meanwhile, Bangued Municipal Agriculturist Marites Balling stressed the importance of crop insurance, especially with the forecasted drought in the coming months.
She reported that their office has already submitted around 500 new applications to the PCIC for crop insurance.
PCIC is a government-owned and controlled corporation under the Department of Agriculture. It provides insurance to farmers and fisherfolk to secure agricultural investments and stabilize farm incomes.
