The large temperature variations and very low temperatures at night during blossoming have caused a drop of up to 70% in the production of Fundão cherries, according to producers, who expect a fruit of higher quality, of larger sizes.

An agronomist engineer from Alcongosta, with orchards in several places in the district of Fundão, mostly south of Serra da Gardunha, Gonçalo Batista says he has a decrease in production, compared to a normal year, “in the order of 60% to 70%”, due to frosts on consecutive days in early April in that district in the Castelo Branco region.

Besides the losses already noted, which will also affect the production of peaches, the agronomist explained that there are varieties that thrive, but then the trees do not have the consistency to hold the fruit and can “fall apart”, worsening the damage.
