The Junta de Extremadura and Agroseguro have agreed that it is a priority to strengthen cherry insurance to optimize its coverage and better adjust it to the real needs of the producing sector.

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Environment, Juan José García, has met with the president of Agroseguro, Ignacio Machetti, in a meeting where they have set a joint roadmap to promote the agricultural insurance system in Extremadura and deepen the technical improvement of the different insurance lines.

During the meeting, one of the key points was agricultural insurance for cherries, considered "a priority" by the Ministry and Agroseguro, given the economic and social relevance of this crop in the northern regions of Extremadura.

Both parties have decided to coordinate to increase the contracting level, which currently stands at around 10 percent, through a technical review of the coverage and its adaptation to the specific demands of the sector.

In parallel, other insurance lines of special interest for the region have been analyzed, such as policies for fruit farms, vegetables, extensive herbaceous crops, and livestock insurance, in addition to other agricultural modalities with "high implementation" in the autonomous community.

The head of Agriculture, Juan José García, has reiterated his intention to maintain and strengthen public aid for the contracting of agricultural insurance, emphasizing that this support must be accompanied by a constant technical update of the different insurance lines.

Likewise, it has been decided to intensify technical collaboration and the flow of information with agricultural professional organizations, cooperatives, and producers, with the aim of increasing transparency, improving dialogue, and having a permanent diagnosis of the needs of the farms.

The Ministry of Agriculture insists that the agricultural insurance system is an "essential tool" to safeguard the economic viability of farms in the face of the increase in adverse weather phenomena.

For this reason, the Junta will continue working with Agroseguro, the State Agricultural Insurance Entity (ENESA), and the sector as a whole in order to continue strengthening this instrument, as stated in a press release.

In the meeting, a detailed analysis of the current situation has been carried out and it has been recalled that in 2025, 28,336 policies were contracted, with a premium volume of 64 million euros and insured capital of 1,258 million, of which 80 percent corresponds to agricultural productions.

"These figures reflect the strategic importance of agricultural insurance for the stability of Extremaduran farms," the regional Executive pointed out.

Also present at the meeting were the Secretary General of the Ministry, José María Guerrero, and the Directors General of Agriculture and Livestock and of the CAP, Julio Rojas and Miguel Gutiérrez. Agroseguro was represented by its Director General, Sergio de Andrés, and its territorial director, Jacinta Patiño.
