Tanzanian growers receive fertilizer training to boost avocado yields

The Tanzania Fertiliser Regulatory Authority (TFRA) is providing avocado growers in Busokelo District, Mbeya Region, with training on fertilizer selection and application to improve yields, fruit quality, and access to domestic and export markets.

The training forms part of the 2026 Avocado Exhibition, held at Lwanga Secondary School grounds, where growers and agricultural stakeholders are exchanging information on orchard management practices.

TFRA Senior Commercial Officer Eliakimu Mniko said the authority aims to help growers make informed decisions about fertilizer use, taking into account crop requirements and the need to maintain fruit quality standards.

Busokelo is an avocado-growing area supplying fruit that meets international market requirements. According to Mniko, appropriate fertilizer application can support crop yields while maintaining the quality required by export markets.

Avocado grower Prisca Batayuyu said the training had improved her understanding of fertilizer quality and application practices. She expects the information to support orchard management decisions and crop performance.

Another grower, Kassim Msafiri, highlighted the importance of matching fertilizer applications to soil requirements. He said applying the information could help increase yields and improve fruit quality for international markets.

TFRA is using the exhibition to promote fertilizer management practices aimed at reducing inappropriate applications, improving farm returns, and supporting Tanzania's avocado export sector.
