An assistant vice president of underwriting and sales with Nationwide Insurance says agriculture’s quick adaptation of drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, is bringing with it new considerations for farm insurance policies.
Justin Owens says a typical farm policy likely doesn’t cover drones and the inherent liability that comes with them.
“Some farm policies today actually classify drones as aircraft, which is an exclusion under a lot of basic policies that are out there,” he says.
He tells Brownfield that farmer operators need to consider their risk in three distinct areas.
“Our existing coverage is really primarily focused on liability coverage.” He says, “We’ve introduced property coverage, because Application drones are easily in excess of $30,000, so we want to protect the asset. We’ve also introduced coverage for aerial application of farm chemicals coverage.”
Owens says producers should thoroughly discuss their coverage options with their agent.
