Crop insurance should be a consideration for farmers growing short-stature corn in the future.
Compeer Financial director of insurance strategies Cole Patrick says policies might be more affordable since shorter corn is less susceptible to wind damage.
“I would say the wind rates essentially plummet, and they’d have to rewrite the loss procedures probably and that might take a few years through some experimental stuff with NCIS. So yes, I would see wind coverage getting cheaper.”
He tells Brownfield insuring for late-stage green snap can be costly and complicated.
“It pays one-for-one, so you find one stalk snapped, that’s one percent damage. So they can get really high in damages, and sometimes it’s discretionary.”
He says when growers are less concerned about coverage for green snap, they can focus on other areas like pollination.
