The crop claims manager with COUNTRY Financial says harvest season is one of the most important times of year for farmers to communicate with their crop insurance agent.

Dylan Houser says a summer of rough weather means crop insurance claims are likely for many farmers this year. 

“So, if you suspect you have a lot of downed crops out in the field or flooded out areas, make sure we give the adjuster opportunity to get out there and document the damage, provide some guidance.”  He says, “You really can’t be too early when it comes to turning in a claim.”

He tells Brownfield, “I think there’s a misconception that if you turn a claim in and we don’t find any damage, you’re gonna be dinged in the future somehow.”  He says, “That couldn’t be further from the truth. If we get out there and we don’t find damage, we can easily release the claim.”

Houser says it’s also important to keep accurate production records.

“Make sure you’re keeping your production separate by unit, or organized how your policy is set up, it really helps the adjuster if you have that labeled by unit, and it saves a ton of time in the claims process and helps us get indemnity payments out there faster,” he says.

He says if damaged acreage will not be harvested, producers should contact their crop adjuster before taking further action.
