Ukraine - Influence of weather on sweet cherry harvest

Unpredictable weather patterns during the spring of 2024 are posing additional challenges for farmers in Ukraine. After an unusual period of high temperatures, a sudden drop in temperatures, some below freezing, has occurred in certain regions. This fluctuation in weather conditions could potentially have adverse effects on the sweet cherry harvest, leading to reduced yields and increased prices, according to Oksana Gordiy, who heads the cherry orchard project at Uman Fruit Company LLC.

Despite the ongoing war, the company proceeds with expanding its cherry plantations, aiming to increase the orchard area by 2 hectares this year, totalling 22 hectares for the 2024 season. Plans also include further expansion by adding seven additional hectares of sweet cherry orchards next year.

Due to the challenges posed by weather fluctuations and the war, Uman Fruit Company has diversified its operations by venturing into cherry processing, producing cherry-based products such as preserves, spiced berries, and candies. This strategic move aims to make productive use of cherries that may not meet the criteria for fresh fruit sales while maintaining a focus on cultivating high-quality sweet cherries.
