Ukraine - Significant part of stone fruit harvest lost by gardeners in Vinnytsia region

Due to abnormal frosts, Vinnytsia agrarians will not be able to harvest 80% of apricots and peaches and up to 40% of cherries, sour cherries, and plums. This was reported by the head of the Vinnytsia Association of Gardeners “Vinnytsiasadvynprom” Serhiy Boychuk, according to agronews.ua.

“The weather conditions this winter have had a negative impact on gardening, and now we can already say that we have lost a significant part of the harvest. Stone fruit crops have suffered greatly, especially apricots and peaches, to a lesser extent – cherries and plums. Apple trees have suffered the least,” said Boychuk.

According to him, as a result of abnormally low winter temperatures that persisted for a long period, orchards were affected almost throughout the region. In particular, due to severe frosts, fruit buds of trees died.

Therefore, gardeners in the region have already lost up to 80% of this year’s projected harvest of apricots and peaches, and 30-40% of plums and cherries.

As for apple trees, these fruit trees have weathered the frosts better, and harvest losses are projected at 10-15%.

At the same time, Boychuk noted that spring frosts after the start of fruit tree vegetation can significantly affect the stone fruit harvest. Such negative impacts can be partially mitigated by agronomic practices and anti-stress preparations, while the losses caused by abnormal cold cannot be compensated.
