EOcafe: agro-insurance & earth observation – building awareness & capabilities

04.11.2020 9905 views

The agro-insurance sector is going through rapid changes currently due to major trends such as climate change and digitalisation that are impacting on the sector. Climate change induced extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and so do their impacts on agricultural businesses. Earth observation-based products and services can help with the difficult task to support farmers and assess potential damages to crop and agro-companies. The ESA Best Practice project EO4I has sought to capture these developments and assess and analyse both the geo-information needs of the agro-insurance sector and the Earth observation-based services and products currently considered best practice by the wider EO community. The results are presented and synthesised on the EO4I website. On November 5, 2020 at 16:00-16:45 (CET), EARSC is organizing the next EOcafe moderated by host, Geoff SAWYER, EARSC’s Strategic Advisor and former Secretary General  to discuss the value and benefit of Earth observation for the agro-insurance sector. Based on the findings of the EO4I project, Ralf RYTER from GeoVille will elaborate on how EO may help overcome the difficulties faced by the agro-insurance sector, and Hansueli LUSTI, Vice-Director and Agricultural Engineer at Swiss Hail Insurance Company, will explain how geo-information can support the agro-insurance sector in the light of trends such as climate change. In this edition, we will discuss:

  • What are the biggest challenges and trends in the agro-insurance sector?
  • Where are the challenges in integrating EO solutions into the specific agro-insurance business processes? What is the added value to the agro-insurance sector?
  • What is the future of EO in agro-insurance? How can Earth Observation help in the future?

Registration: This webinar is open to ALL but priority will be given to EARSC members. Registration is free but compulsory. Please click on the following link to register by 5th November at 11:00 (CET).
