Philippines - Another town declares state of calamity due to armyworms

Last Monday, the municipal council of Bayambang placed this town under a state of calamity. This was after armyworms destroyed 867 out of 1,480 hectares of onion fields in 40 villages.
Bayambang is the second town in Pangasinan province to be placed in this emergency state. On February 12, the neighbouring town of Bautista was also declared a calamity area after armyworms wiped out 289 of the town’s 300 ha of onion fields.
Artemio Buezon, the town’s agriculturist, said: “We tried to stop the armyworms. But they seemed to have become resistant to insecticides.”
Armyworms breed in grassy patches near the farms. The worms suck the sap from onion leaves, eventually killing the plants.
A hectare of onion yields about 15,000 kilograms. At the prevailing price of P32 (50 eurocents) a kg, a farmer’s gross income is about P480,000 (7,500 euros) for every hectare. The production cost is about P200,000 (3,100 euros) a hectare, giving farmers a profit of P280,000 (4,400 euros) a hectare.
