Australia’s Victorian government has launched a new $9 million plant protein hub at Agriculture Victoria’s Horsham SmartFarm, following a total $12 million investment. The hub, which includes a state-of-the-art glasshouse, supports agricultural research and innovation focused on plant-based protein crops. This initiative is expected to drive advancements in high-protein crop development, such as lentils, chickpeas, and field peas.

“Victoria is leading the way in plant-based protein research”

Minister for Agriculture Ros Spence announced that the hub will provide shared spaces for researchers, start-ups, and growers. It features a fully equipped test kitchen, advanced analytical tools, and other facilities to foster the exploration and development of new plant-based products. Spence noted, “Victoria is leading the way in plant-based protein research, building world-class facilities and fostering collaboration that will transform agriculture and strengthen regional economies.”

A space for collaboration

The hub is already operational, offering capacity for up to 10 PhD students and three start-ups. Collaboration between industry professionals and academic researchers is a key feature of the hub, with Agriculture Victoria working closely with industry partners on future research opportunities. The facility has already contributed to job creation during its construction, with additional roles expected to emerge as the hub continues its operations in research, education, and industry collaboration.

The new glasshouse is designed to accelerate crop research, improve pest and disease management, and enhance climate resilience. The development is expected to assist farmers in adapting to changing environmental conditions, ultimately helping maintain productivity in the region.

Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Victoria Michaela Settle noted, “This investment will help our communities reach new markets, drive local jobs, champion sustainable practices, and ensure a strong and resilient future for regional Victoria.”

Creating pathways for future agricultural careers

In addition to fostering innovation in the agricultural sector, the hub will also provide educational opportunities for students at various levels, from primary school to postgraduate. A dedicated education space within the facility will enable hands-on learning, encouraging future generations to pursue careers in agriculture.

Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora stated, “Having fit-for-purpose facilities like the Plant Protein Hub at Horsham SmartFarm strengthens our research capabilities and opens the door to new opportunities across agriculture and food innovation.”
