Amar Seafood has received approval for the development of a new halibut farming site in the Norwegian municipality of Frøya.

Norway-based aquaculture company Amar Seafood has announced the approval of its plans for the development of a halibut farm in Frøya municipality. Amar Seafood's original application for licensing was denied by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, however approval has been granted following appeals by the company.

"It’s exciting to see a new species being introduced to Frøya, a municipality known for its aquaculture expertise. We have brought together a unique team with over 100 years of combined experience in farming salmon and other marine species. Together with a good location with the right current, temperature and ideal protection, this provides the perfect foundation for halibut farming in Norway,” said Anders Sæther, a representative of Amar Seafood, on LinkedIn.

The three licenses acquired by Amar allow a maximum capacity of 2,350 tonnes, which the company will take full advantage of as it slowly scales up production at the site. The new farm will also serve as a testing ground for the research and development of equipment and operational solutions.
