Cyprus Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou participated in the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council, expressing satisfaction that Cyprus’ proposals were included in the European Commission’s Vision for Agriculture and Food.
However, she emphasized the need for enhanced funding to implement the vision effectively.
Panayiotou called for a stronger primary sector that is competitive, attractive to youth, and supported by fair and stable incomes.
She advocated for greener and more digital agriculture, accessible technologies, and education to address climate-related challenges. She stressed the importance of maintaining robust financial support for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and establishing a fund to address climate change impacts and agricultural crises.
The minister warned that insufficient funding risks undermining CAP’s effectiveness and the sustainability of agriculture, particularly in countries like Cyprus facing droughts and high production costs. She highlighted agriculture as a strategic pillar for Europe’s security and called for investments in water management and crisis response.
Panayiotou reaffirmed Cyprus’ commitment to achieving practical results through dedication to the EU’s agricultural goals.
