EU approves €155 million Danish seafood processing scheme

The European Commission has greenlit a €155 million scheme aimed at advancing sustainability in Denmark’s fishery and aquaculture processing industries.

The initiative seeks to enhance the energy efficiency and reduce the carbon emissions of the Danish seafood processing industry through investments in environmentally friendly energy technologies.

Set to run until the end of 2029, the scheme will provide direct grants to large Danish fish processing companies undertaking green projects. The funding is intended to facilitate the adoption of cleaner energy solutions, contributing to Denmark’s broader climate goals.

The Commission evaluated the scheme under Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which permits State aid to support specific economic activities under defined conditions. It also aligned the plan with the Guidelines for State aid to the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Officials concluded that the programme is both necessary and proportionate, addressing the sector’s unique environmental challenges without distorting competition or trade between EU Member States. With this approval, Denmark is poised to lead by example in reducing the environmental impact of fish processing while fostering sustainable growth in the industry.
