Egypt braces for early Khamsin winds as severe weather fluctuations expected to peak Friday

Head of the Climate Change Information Center Dr. Mohamed Ali Fahim, has issued a warning over significant weather fluctuations expected to impact the country in the coming hours, coinciding with the month of Amshir, traditionally known for its strong winds.

According to Fahim, forecasts indicate the onset of early Khamsin winds that will gradually intensify.

He said that the unstable weather will reach its peak on Friday.

Weather forecast for the coming days

Disturbance began on Wednesday, with moderate wind activity affecting Lower Egypt, the desert hinterland, and Greater Cairo.

Wind speeds are expected to increase on Thursday, becoming high-intensity and extending from the northern coasts southward to Minya Governorate, according to the climate center.

While on Friday, it is projected to be the most severe day, with very strong winds sweeping across most parts of the country.

Dust-laden winds are expected in the Suez Canal cities, Upper Egypt, and Sinai, while some parts in northern Delta and North Coast are expected to see light rain.

Advices to protect crops through precautionary measures

In light of these conditions, Fahim urged farmers to adopt precautionary measures to minimize potential losses caused by soil erosion and crop damage, as follows:

1- Postponing irrigation for wheat that has reached or is approaching the heading stage, as well as fennel, anise, flax, broad beans, and sugarcane, to prevent uprooting due to strong winds.

2- Avoiding the spraying of pesticides or fertilizers on all crops, as their application would be ineffective during high winds.

3- Ensuring plastic coverings on agricultural tunnels and greenhouses are tightly secured, particularly for tomato, cantaloupe, and watermelon crops, to prevent tearing or structural damage.

Fahim concluded by calling on farmers and citizens to closely follow official weather updates and exercise caution to safeguard their crops, property, and livelihoods amid the anticipated storm conditions.
