The frost is back in the French orchards. Candles, spraying, fires…For the second year in a row, producers must work twice as hard to try to save their future harvests.
It is still too early to make assessments, as the cold should last for several more days, but some producers have already observed some significant damage. The night of the 3rd to the 4th of April was the coldest April night recorded since 1947, according to Météo-France. Temperatures down to -9.3°C were reported in the Marne department, -7°C in Nevers and -6°C in Saint-Étienne.
In order to help the farmers through this second wave of frost, Jean Castex claimed to have asked the French minister of agriculture to mobilize the agricultural disaster system as early as this week.
