Burhanpur district administration, in a bid to provide relief to banana farmers on their suffering crop loss due to heavy rain, windstorm and hail reported in May, has generated a demand of Rs 65 crore to distribute as compensation.

According to Burhanpur collector Bhavya Mittal, heavy rain, windstorm and hail on May 25 this year had wreaked havoc on banana crops.

Nearly 4700 farmers were affected by this natural disaster.

"The distribution of the compensation amount will be done under BC rule 6-4.

The process for compensation has begun and the affected farmers will receive the funds soon," she said while talking to mediapersons.

Mittal informed that the compensation amount has been fixed after a thorough survey of the crop loss reported in around 80 villages.

However, as some farmers raised concerns about discrepancies in the survey and demanded a reinvestigation, the collector told them that an investigation will be conducted by the SDM and Tehsildar at their level, and any errors found will be rectified.

Two days after the heavy rain and windstorm caused major crop loss, another round of bad weather on May 27 created similar problems in some areas.

The administration, after putting reports of the crop loss reported on May 27, are expecting some rise in distributing the compensation to some more farmers.

This relief is crucial for the Burhanpur farmers who lost their crops to the natural disaster.

The compensation will help them recover some of their losses and restart their cultivation, the senior administrative officials mentioned.
