India - Rajasthan to allow farmers to prepare crop loss reports

Rajasthan will soon allow its farmers to do 'girdawari' to assess loss of crops due to natural calamities for getting compensation.

The government provides compensation to farmers based on girdawari reports. Compensation under the PM crops insurance scheme is also based on girdawari reports.

According to revenue minister Ramlal Jat, a portal will be launched soon where farmers would be able to upload photos of damaged crops on their farms and share details. Currently, this task is done by patwaris through a tedious physical survey of fields.

Officials said the photos and details uploaded by farmers could be verified by offcials through geotagging, which allows officials to assess the damages without going to the field physically which is not only time-consuming but requres a lot of manpower.

Besides, there are also disputes over the quantum of damage of crops through physical verification. Geotagging would also remove such complaints in the future, according to officials.

Maharashtra is the first state in the country to implement this scheme and officials from Rajasthan were sent there to study the intricacies of the scheme and is all set to implement it in the state, said officials.

Senior revenue officials said they were also working on the CM's announcement of simplifying procedures by adopting technology on revenue matters including the transfer of ownership of land and other related matters through the computerization of land records.

Gehlot had announced in the very first budget on automatic transfer of ownership of land or property on purchase based on the registry records.
