India - Ten Uttar Pradesh districts hit by unseasonal rain

Substantial crop damage due to unseasonal rain was reported in at least ten districts of Uttar Pradesh, a survey by the UP relief commissioner's office revealed.

Fatehpur, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Sitapur, Aligarh, Moradabad, Sonbhadra, Hamirpur, Sambhal, and Unnao are among the districts which have reported the crop loss. These districts were hit by hailstorms and rain between March 31 and April 2.

Over one lakh farmers were found to have been affected by unseasonal rain in 11 districts of the state, revealed the survey conducted from March 15 to till date.

District-wise crop damage report

As per the reports of the UP relief commissioner's office, a total of 35,480.52 hectares of agricultural land was extremely hit and Rs 58.59 crore was payable to the affected farmers, reported IANS.

In Fatehpur, at least 1,343 hectares of land belonging to 5,026 farmers have been affected. Similarly, 2804 hectares of land of 4,738 farmers in Agra and 559 hectares of land of 3,090 farmers in Bareilly have been affected due to the unseasonal rain and hailstorm.

Around 11,265 farmers in Chandauli having 2,986 hectares of land, 396 farmers with 271 hectares of land in Hamirpur, 205 farmers with 145 hectares in Jhansi, and 7,380 farmers having 6,216 hectares of land in Lalitpur have been affected, reported IANS.

In Prayagraj, at least 9,252 farmers having 4,448 hectares suffered crop losses.

Uttar Pradesh has received unseasonal rain accompanied by thunderstorms, hailstorms, and gusty wind due to the western disturbances in the last two weeks.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath orders crop loss compensation for farmers

On April 2, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered all district magistrates to sanction the release of financial relief from the state disaster relief fund to farmers who incurred crop losses due to unseasonal rain and hailstorm.

The chief minister further directed that there should be no delay in paying compensation to farmers and emphasized that guarding farmers' interests was the government's top priority.

CM Yogi Adityanath also instructed that timely information should be made available to the farmers about weather forecasts, according to the government’s spokesperson.
