Italy - Cold weather slows down asparagus productions

"Production has not peaked yet due to the relatively low temperatures," reports manager Emile Fellini. "After harvesting operations in Campania, the produce should now be coming from Apulia, but there are a few delays."

Demand is good thanks to the programming carried our with the big retail chain, “but consumption is not very lively. We are seeing how things go, just like with all the other products.”

Asparagus tips are among the most popular. "They are processed already during the production stage and are finished in our facilities where we package them. We have different options available depending on client requests."

Asparagus tips are placed in 200 gram R-Pet punnets with lids, or flowpacked or in cardboard trays. There are multiple options and the "Io Riciclo" crate combines eco-friendly communication with a project that aims at respecting the environment.

"Our asparagus tips are successful because they are ready to be cooked, as the tougher part has already been removed. Consumers only purchase the tender part."

As for production costs, Fellini reasserts what stated before: "certifications, new packaging and sustainable agriculture are lovely concepts, but they clash with a question: who pays for all these things? The energy costs are bringing us to our knees, we need to do something, otherwise we risk not making it."
