The Government of Kenya has mobilised food and non-food essentials for urgent delivery to areas affected by food and nutrition shortages caused by adverse weather and low rainfall during the recently ended short rains.

Speaking on the intervention, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said pastoralist communities in Mandera County will also receive fodder and water for livestock, alongside animal offtake programmes to minimize financial losses linked to drought.

“We have taken proactive measures to cushion the people of Mandera County and their livestock from the vagaries of drought,” DP Kindiki said.

The Deputy President met with Mandera Senator Ali Roba and the county’s Members of Parliament to gather their input on a coherent response to the ongoing food and nutritional crisis.

He updated them on the government’s measures and stressed that timely interventions are crucial to safeguard livelihoods.

The relief effort underscores the government’s commitment to support vulnerable communities, particularly pastoralists, during periods of climate-induced stress, ensuring both people and animals are assisted.
