According to data from Agroseguro consulted by Europa Press, farmers in Almeria have already insured more than 2,300 hectares of vegetables under cover for the 2022/2023 campaign in a total of 3,290 plots of crops under shelter, which means coverage for about 204,509 tons of fruit and vegetable products valued at about 162 million euro.

The contracting of the policies is still open and already accounts for 40.9% of all that was insured in the previous campaign, a figure that rises to 46.9% if we don't take into account the policies for watermelon crops corresponding to the spring-summer cycles.

So far, pepper is, once again, the vegetable with the most insured area: a total of 1,157.1 hectares for an estimated production of 91,450 tons valued at 86.4 million euros. In the previous season, 1,913.10 hectares were insured for a production of 154,130 tons valued at 146 million euro.

Almeria tomato grown under cover is the second most assured product. For the coming winter, producers have already insured 46% of the area, i.e., up to 508.8 hectares, which means that an estimated production of 53,950 tons has already been insured for 42.5 million euros. In the past season, they insured a total of more than 1,102 hectares of land that produced 114,520 tons for a value of 94 million euros.

Cucumbers and courgettes are the products with the highest insured area, with 311.28 and 200.11 hectares, respectively. However, the area insured still only amounts to 44.8% of the area of cucumbers and 26.8% of the area of courgettes that was insured last year.

In addition to crops, insurance also tries to protect the facilities in which they are developed. The number of policies to cover damage to greenhouses has also been increasing, with 937 in 2021 compared to 900 in 2020. This means ensuring facilities valued, in the last year, at more than 88.4 million euros.

For the time being, for the 2022 marketing year, the insurance companies have insured 429 facilities with an estimated value of 47.3 million euros.
