Spain - Jerte cherry crops partially damaged by rains

Weekend rainfall in the Jerte Valley, in the Spanish region of Extremadura, has caused damage to cherry and picota cherry varieties that were to be harvested for distribution this week (week 24) and the first few days of the following week.

Fortunately, the extent of the damage will be limited compared to the previous campaign, in which a very significant part of the harvest was lost, since cherries are a very delicate fruit that easily splits when exposed to constant rain.

"Although there have been some rains over the past weekend, most of the rainfall was recorded from Sunday night to Monday," says Mónica Tierno, general director of the Agrupación de Cooperativas del Valle del Jerte.

"It's only one day compared to the 10 days of uninterrupted rain we had last season, so only the fruit that was to be distributed in the markets until the end of this week will be affected. By next week, we will gradually stop seeing batches with damages," says the general director of this entity.

The cherry and picota cherry campaign in the Jerte Valley will still last about 5 weeks, until mid-July. The shortage of labor remains one of the biggest concerns for the sector in the area.
