According to the first estimates of Agroseguro, the compensations for the frost in Spain last week, due to the Ciril storm, rose to 150 million euro. "The Arctic front that penetrated the peninsula has become the worst agrarian insurance meteorological event in the Spanish countryside throughout the country's agrarian insurance 42 years of history," the entity stated.

So far, the insured farmers have sent accident reports that show damages on more than 37,000 hectares throughout Spain. This data, together with the reconnaissance visits carried out to the affected areas shows that there was very serious and widespread damage to crops that were in very sensitive growth and development phases, especially stone fruit and pome production in the Ebro Valley, and almond production, mainly in Castilla-La Mancha. Cherry, citrus, khaki, vineyard, rapeseed, beetroot, and various winter vegetables have also suffered the impact of the sudden thermal decline.

The damage recorded may amount to more than 30% of the insurance premium intended to cover agricultural risks for a whole year, which clearly portrays the seriousness of its effects.

By Autonomous Community, the total estimate of compensation for insured farmers in Catalonia reaches 59 million euro and in Aragon, it reaches 42 million. Compensation for insured farmers in Castile-La Mancha is estimated at 24 million euro, in the Valencian Community at 12 million, and in the Region of Murcia at 8 million. The rest of the compensation, up to 150 million euro, corresponds to insured producers in the rest of the regions and crops affected; including Castile and Leon, and Navarra.

In Castile and Leon, there's been damage reported on more than 3,500 hectares of cultivation in the nine provinces. According to the latest data from Agroseguro, the largest area affected is located in the province of Valladolid, with almost 800 hectares affected. It was followed by Avila, Zamora, and Leon, with about 600 hectares. In Leon, we also have evidence of damage to the pear and apple of Bierzo, which will be very important, according to sources.

In Navarre there is damage on at least 835 hectares, mainly to almond, stone fruit trees, and winter vegetables, such as peas and green beans. Agroseguro has already received claims and estimates compensation of 2.5 million euro in the Foral Community.
