This week, farmers in the Murcia region are waking up in different scenes of devastation: lettuce, artichokes, and even citrus fruits are frozen solid in their fields as a result of sub-zero temperatures. Over the past couple of days, the fields in the Guad a lentin Valley have been the hardest hit by 'black frost' - an intense cold with very little moisture in the air. A layer of ice has blanketed the sensitive crops.

Luckily, many farmers brought forward the artichoke harvest, so much of the produce has already been collected. Lettuce, lemons, and, to a lesser extent, broccoli crops haven't been as lucky, and coordinator of the Al imer cooperative, Francisco Martinez, has warned that the slow-down in production will inevitably push up the price of fruit and vegetables.
