Spain - Unusually cold weather in Spain led to price explosions for vegetables

Spain repeatedly had to contend with weather extremes in recent weeks and months, which was reflected not least in the supply volume. "The market is generally characterized by a high price level. In regions such as Almería and Murcia, it has been unusually cold recently, which is why Spanish production had hardly any output, whereupon there was a real price explosion. The price for eggplants in week 6 was 4.00 EUR/kg," Jan Hövelkamp from Polfrucht AG at the Berlin wholesale market told us.

The demand for eggplants is given, however, the price would be probably too high for the customers from a certain point and make themselves accordingly in the sales noticeable. Furthermore, due to the high energy prices, less greenhouse produce was grown in the Netherlands, which had the same effect on prices.

Spanish vegetables are offered by the company from late October/early November to March/April. These include iceberg lettuce, bell peppers and zucchini. The price explosion began around the end of December/beginning of January. Furthermore, Polfrucht currently also purchases pome fruit from the Langförden-Oldenburg producer wholesale market (ELO), but also Chinese cabbage, celery and leeks in quantities relevant to the market.

Polfrucht's core business includes asparagus, berry fruits - especially strawberries - as well as porcini mushrooms and chanterelles from Eastern Europe and other mushroom varieties from Germany. "As soon as the season for porcini ends, we are largely out of the mushroom business. Polish mushrooms are not imported by us."
