Taiwan - Agricultural losses from cold wave estimated at NT$133.65 million

Agricultural losses nationwide from a cold wave earlier this month have been estimated to be NT$133.65 million (US$4.75 million), with Pingtung County the worst hit, according to the Council of Agriculture (COA).

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, the damage in Pingtung has been estimated to be NT$47.88 million, accounting for 36 percent of the country's total losses, COA data showed.

Miaoli County came in second with an estimated NT$33.66 million in losses, which made up a quarter of the national total, followed by Taoyuan, which suffered NT$18.82 million in losses, or 14 percent of the total, and Taichung, with NT$18.47 million in losses, also accounting for around 14 percent of the total.

The COA said that estimated crop losses totaled NT$130.92 million with 1,324 hectares of crop damaged. Mangoes were the hardest hit, followed by strawberries, pears, and chives.

Fishery losses totaled NT$2.73 million, with cobia farmers sustaining the heaviest losses, the COA said.
