A total of 115 irrigation projects implemented by the government across various regions of Tanzania have been completed, empowering farmers to grow more than one crop per year.

Raymond Mndolwa, National Irrigation Commission (NiRC) director-general unveiled here yesterday when speaking at the commission’s workers council meeting.

He said that the successful completion of the  projects is part of the government’s broader investment in the irrigation sector.

The budget of 1.2trn/- has been allocated to enhance irrigation infrastructure nationwide, he said.

Mndolwa emphasised that the government’s efforts are geared towards boosting agricultural production and improving farmers' economic stability, helping them compete in both domestic and international markets.

He encouraged farmers to invest more in irrigation farming, noting that it is a profitable approach that enables multiple harvests annually.

The NiRC official also highlighted the importance of maintaining irrigation infrastructure, urging farmers to take care of the facilities to prevent damage and ensure the continued success of agricultural productivity, particularly in food production.

Dr. Richard Masika, NiRC board, chairperson praised the government for its significant investment in irrigation, strengthening the sector, and enhancing its potential.

Eng. Said Ibrahim, chairperson of the NiRC Workers Council, reassured the Council’s commitment to performing its duties as per the law and instructions, ensuring the effective implementation of the Commission’s strategies.
