Turkey - Exreme weather hits grape production

19.06.2024 545 views

The agricultural sector in Türkiye is grappling with severe weather fluctuations, impacting crop yields and quality across the country. Unusual weather patterns, including heavy rainfall, hailstorms in some areas, and drought in others, have significantly damaged crops, particularly fruits and vegetables like grapes, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. These disruptions have already led to increased food prices.

In Manisa, known as Türkiye's grape hub, growers like Ali Uçar and Levent Güngör report substantial losses. Climate change has disrupted the usual grape growing cycle, with warm winters preventing vineyards from entering dormancy. This year, grape yields are predicted to plummet compared to previous years, with some vineyards seeing reductions by as much as 50%. Extreme heat has further exacerbated the situation, causing sunburn damage to crops.

Authorities anticipate a poor grape harvest this year due to these climatic challenges, highlighting the vulnerability of Türkiye's agricultural sector to changing weather conditions.
