USA - Historic Indiana flooding threatens crop potential as farmers continue to evaluate storm damage

Indiana’s State Climatologist says last week’s historic flooding is raising concerns about the long-term impact on the 2026 crop.

Dr. Beth Hall says some areas saw anywhere from 4 to 15 inches of consistent rainfall.

“Indiana was just right in the track of the storm system, and this led to a situation of several consecutive days of not just rain, but heavy rainfall,” she says. “The same areas that were getting rain was just seeing it day after day.”

Roger Wenning says strong winds also caused damage in parts of southeast Indiana.

“About 15 miles east of us, my youngest son had some tool shed doors and the roof torn off,” he says. “Some of his corn was pushed down from green snap.”

Hamilton County farmer Chris Cherry says it’s too early to know the full extent of the damage.

“We’re worried about the structure of the corn,” he says. “Making sure that the stalks and roots have not been impacted with all these heavy rains and soil saturation. It’s just going to take a little time to tell what those damages are actually going to be.”

President Trump recently approved a Presidential Emergency Declaration through FEMA to bring additional federal resources to Indiana to support emergency response costs in more than 53 counties.

The National Weather Service says another round of thunderstorms across central Indiana is expected Tuesday night into Wednesday.
