Last week, the city of Liberty Lake saw golf ball-sized hail through the region. This unusual hail storm left severe damage to homes and properties.
Located around 15 miles outside of Spokane Valley, the hail storm caused significant crop damage for wheat farmers. It’s causing a delay to their normal harvesting schedule.
“10 days to two weeks behind, normally in grass harvest, we [would be] probably wrapping up or we will be wrapped up by now,” said David Gady, a local farmer near Rockford. “Harvesting is the stressful time anyway, you know machines are running, hiring, stuff like that. You think things are going good, and this just adds up on top of it.”
From the generation to the generation, David Gady, who has been farming in same field for more than 30 years, has not seen anything like this hail storm before.
“I’ve been married for 30 years. I just used that for the guidelines. 30 years I’ve never seen a hail storm,” Gady said.
More than 300 acres of his winter wheat fields are unharvestable. This means it’s a complete loss after putting it all the efforts over months.
“It’s your livelihood, and you are counting on those crops, everything like that. It just adds to that stress level of what you are going to do next,” Gady said.
He added that he’s glad that his crop insurance would cover the most of the damage.
