In the past few days, California has seen excessive rainfall. The Santa Maria area, a year-round vegetable growing region, received between 3 and 5 inches of rain in a short amount of time. “We grow most of our items year-round, so everything from root vegetables to baby lettuces, to specialty greens are currently in the ground,” says Matt Hiltner with the company. Harvest crews have been halted until further notice.
Road closures are having an impact on deliveries, but Hiltner says it is a temporary issue that will hopefully be resolved soon. “We are already seeing some of the main highways starting to open back up, so things are certainly trending in the right direction.”
On a positive note, Babé Farms was able to continue harvest in areas that weren’t hit as hard by the rainstorms. Also, the company has been able to supplement inventory with product from partner growers in other regions. As a result, supplies should keep flowing to stores and empty shelves are not anticipated. “We look forward to continuing to serve our customers however we can until we are fully recovered from the storm.”
While these pictures are from Babé Farms’ fields, many more California growers are dealing with these same issues right now.
