Germany - Farming lobby cuts winter wheat crop forecast after rain

The association of German farmers DBV said on Wednesday it has cut its forecast of Germany’s 2021 winter wheat harvest to around 21 million tonnes from 22.82 million tonnes forecast in July after rainy weather. This would mean the winter wheat harvest would be little changed on the 2020 crop, the association said in a crop report. Storms and torrential rain hit parts of west and south Germany in July, causing heavy loss of life and widespread flooding. Work on Germany’s wheat and rapeseed harvest has been repeatedly interrupted by rain, the association said. Germany is the European Union’s second largest wheat producer after France and in most years the EU’s largest grower of rapeseed, Europe’s main oilseed for edible oil, biodiesel and animal feed meal production. In many regions, farmers are struggling with continued rain showers and can almost only snatch the wheat from fields during dry periods, it said. But the winter barley crop, used for animal feed, is generally complete, the association said. More rain is forecast in Germany into the weekend. Source - https://www.nasdaq.com
