In a statement here on Sunday the Desheeya Karshaka Samajam general secretary Muthalamthode Mani said that farmers in the state have sustained a crop loss of nearly Rs 100 crore in the drought. In Palakkad district alone the crop loss is estimated at Rs 30 crore, he said.
The drought affected paddy, rubber, mango, vegetables, pepper, banana, cardamom and other crops because there was no rain for the last seven months due to the failure of both the North East and South West monsoon, the statement said.
He alleged that the agriculture department has not taken any steps to assess the crop loss and pay compensation to the affected farmers. The drought has also affected the dairy farmers in the district with around eight cattle deaths reported in the district last month. The milk production in the district has reduced to half affecting the dairy farmers very badly, the statement said.
