The Unió de Llauradors (Growers Association) has reported that the hailstorm recorded last Friday afternoon has caused severe damage to crops in the entire municipality of Torreblanca and to some more localised items in Cabanes and Alcalá de Xivert.

According to a statement from La Unió, Torreblanca suffered the impact of a violent hailstorm which has caused severe damage, especially to citrus crops.

"A lot of fruit has fallen to the ground. In other cases, marks have been left on the fruit's skin and damage has been observed even on the trees themselves," pointed out sources from the association.

Some vegetable crops have also been affected, especially open ground artichokes and tomatoes, as well as olives, which in some cases have fallen to the ground.

The Unió de Llauradors added that the losses are covered by the current system of agricultural insurance, as long as growers have a policy in force.

Those responsible have already got in contact with Agroseguro, requesting for the area to be visited immediately in order to speed up the process.

"It is important for the damage assessment to be carried as soon as possible, primarily for the earliest citrus varieties," they highlighted.
