According to the Valencian Association of Agricultural Producers (AVA-Asaja), 30% of the area planted with grapes in the region of Vinalopó has been affected by the recent storms. According to the first estimates, which will have to be confirmed in the near future, some 4,000 hectares with a value that could reach 14 million Euro have been affected. Vinalopó table grapes have become one of the traditional products of the Christmas holidays. Last year, according to the Protected Designation of Origin, about 2 million kilos were distributed across Spain on dates close to New Year's Eve. Two out of every three grapes consumed came from this region in the province of Alicante. These rains could take a toll on the campaign that will kick off in the coming weeks, after last year's had been considered one with "excellent quality." Moreover, the volume harvested may fall, unlike last season, when there was a 4.4% increase in the production. Vinalopó table grapes have not been the only ones affected by these rains. According to La Unió, the storms have damaged about 4,000 hectares of vineyards in the regions of Vall d'Albaida, La Costera and Ribera Alta. The value of the losses caused by the torrential rains could reach up to 200 million Euro, according to the first estimations made by both AVA and La Unió. Source - https://www.freshplaza.com
