Last Saturday's hailstorm in Finström could cause substantial losses to apple growers. The extent of the damage will be determined in a few days.
On Saturday afternoon, thunderstorms raged in northern Åland, accompanied by hail. Tjudö, Västanträsk and Finström are some of the areas affected.
"It is still too early to say how great the damage will be, but hail can have devastating effects on the apple harvest. The fruit becomes spotty and cannot be sold to stores," says Yngve Österlund, chairman of the Åland Fruit growers Association.
Tjudö and Västanträsk belong to areas prone to hailstorms. "The only thing you can do is to have the plantations scattered. We have long discussed the possibility of insurance, but so far, the premiums were so expensive that it does not compensate."
