Canada - Agricorp pays out more than $253 million after challenging 2025 season with soybeans recording the biggest losses

As of mid April, Ontario farmers claimed more than $253 million in Agricorp production insurance for the 2025 season, more than double the $115 million claimed a year earlier.

And that’s not surprising. Drought conditions seriously cut yields in large areas of the province last year, especially east of Toronto, in stark contrast to the optimal weather that produced record corn and soybean crops in 2024.

Hard-hit areas dragged down the provincial yield numbers last year, with Agricorp enrollees recording 191 bushels per acre of corn, the same as the 10-year average. Soybeans averaged 46 bushels per acre, or 6 % lower than the 10-year average of 50 bushels per acre.

The importance of production insurance “was especially evident last year,” Agricorp said in a statement to Farmers Forum. “In 2025, due to challenging weather conditions like dry weather, many farmers faced significant production and yield pressures. Production Insurance was there to help, providing timely support when it was needed most.”

The provincial crop insurer awarded $209 million for grain and oilseed losses, accounting for the vast majority of claims in 2025. Soybeans led with $103.75 million in claims, followed by corn at $81.8 million. Forage losses generated the third-highest claim total at $9.25 million, followed by flue-cured tobacco ($8.28 million), apples ($7.32 million) and fresh market vegetables ($5.1 million). Winter wheat losses amounted to approximately $4.17 million.

The total coverage value of the 5.2 million acres of crops insured with Agricorp last year was approximately $4.93 billion. Payouts to farmers ($253 million total) amounted to 5 % of the available coverage for 2025.

In a complete turnaround from 2024 when Southwestern Ontario counties led the province in corn and soybean claims, the drought-stricken counties of broader Eastern Ontario are topping the list in 2025.
