Banana, paddy, tuber and vegetable cultivation in 13.720 hectares in Ernakulam were lost due to monsoon rains in June so far.
In the heavy pre-monsoon rain, the district had reported crop loss to the tune of Rs 3.25cr in just one week from May 15. Crops in 165 hectares were damaged in the rain.
As per the details provided by various Krishi Bhavans in the district, the crop loss in June has been estimated to the tune of Rs 82.46 lakh. Of the total loss, banana farmers suffered major loss. As much as 70% of the total loss belongs to banana cultivation.
Farmers in Aluva block incurred huge loss as cultivation in 8.48 hectares of land suffered damage in rain this month so far. While Piravom block suffered loss of Rs 7.70 lakh, Kothamangalam block incurred loss of Rs 1.02 lakh.
However, the crop loss in the natural calamity last month was huge in Ernakulam.
The total loss the district suffered in May alone would come to Rs 8.18 crore and crops cultivated in 465 hectares were damaged in the heavy rain lashed during pre-monsoon. The crop loss had crossed Rs 10 crore on a single day when heavy rain and strong wind lashed the eastern parts of Ernakulam in April this year. Crop loss to the tune of Rs 13.81cr was recorded on April 5.
Ernakulam records deficiency in rainfall in the current monsoon season. In June, the district recorded 48% deficient rainfall.
